Abstract:
This qualitative study explore how Th university students develop their intercultural competence through a combination of reflective introspection based on personal life experiences and formal education, particularly within the context of an intercultural communication course. The research employs innovative photo-elicitation techniques integrated into online interviews, using an integrative multi-level paradigm culture and Intercultural Communication as its theoretical framework.
The study underscores that while previous literature has primarily focused on fostering Th students' understanding of Anglophone cultures within language classrooms, it neglects the significance of comprehing cultural knowledge from subcultures. It argues for a broader perspective that includes cultivating intercultural competence beyond formal education settings and considers diverse sources of development.
Key Findings:
The study reveals several significant growth areas and positive attitudes towards other cultures among participants as they reflect on their life experiences and enroll in an Intercultural Communication course. This phenomenon, known to promote multicultural mindsets, illustrates the potential for people from different cultural backgrounds to live harmoniously together. The findings imply substantial implications for integrating non-native English-speaking cultures and subcultures into educational materials and pedagogical practices within intercultural education programs in Thland.
Implications:
The research suggests that by embracing a comprehensive approach that combines personal experiences with formal education, educators can effectively promote Th university students' intercultural competence. This not only enhances their ability to engage in respectful cross-cultural interactions but also supports the development of multicultural understanding and tolerance within society.
Future Research Directions:
The study opens avenues for further exploration into applying an integrated multi-level intercultural model as a comprehensive lens when cultivating intercultural competence across different settings, both within Thland's educational context and internationally. Researchers are encouraged to investigate how this approach can be adapted and refined to enhance the effectiveness of cultural education strategies.
