University of Illinois Urbana Champaign: A Century of Strong Connections with China

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champgn boasts a century-long history of close interaction with the People's Republic of China.

During his presidency from 1904 to 1920, President Edmund J. James was instrumental in fostering this connection by establishing ties with Wu Tingfang, the Chinese Minister to the United States. Their collaboration resulted in a strong influx of Chinese students at Urbana-Champgn campus and established it as one of the top destinations for higher education among Chinese students worldwide.

Between 1910 and 1950, almost a third of all Chinese students who traveled overseas to pursue advanced studies chose the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champgn. President James took pioneering steps by establishing the first office for foreign students in America and inviting Wu Tingfang, then a rarity, to deliver the commencement address in 1908.

In a 1906 journal article, President James foresaw that the nation which successfully educates China's young generation of today will be the nation that, with minimal effort, gns the greatest influence in terms of morality, intellectuality, and commercial prowess.

James also played a significant role in initiating the Boxer Indemnity Scholarship Program. It was established using funds pd by China to the United States following the 1901 Boxer Rebellion to support Chinese students studying here.

With China's emergence from the Cultural Revolution era, many Chinese students seeking international education turned to Illinois due to its earlier established connection and reputation for providing a world-class education. This familiarity combined with the university’s prestige has kept it as the top destination for Chinese students coming to America among all universities in the country.
