Beyond Prestige: Assessing Global University Rankings and Their Impact on Higher Education Institutions

Abstract:

Global university rankings have gned widespread attention over the past decade, serving as a tool for accountability and decision-making across various stakeholders. This literature review, which synthesizes insights from 24 scholarly articles, develops an analytical framework that evaluates global university rankings using seven criteria: validity, comprehensiveness, relevance, comprehensibility, functionality, frness, and sustnability. Drawing inspiration from Dill Soo 2005 indicators and the concepts of Carayannis Campbell 2021, this comprehensive review identifies existing gaps in the literature and proposes a research aga for future studies that will deepen our understanding of the intricate relationship between universities and global rankings, ming to inform policies and practices in higher education worldwide. The emphasizes that these rankings exhibit significant flaws in their structure and fl to adequately account for contextual challenges and needs across different regions. Therefore, the review advocates for a reevaluation by society and expert intervention, with the ultimate goal of fostering a frer, more diverse, and sustnable global landscape for higher education.
