In an initiative that provide international students with a firsthand experience of the American way of life, Brigham Young University BYU recently welcomed four exchange students from various countries. These students, who are part of the Incoming Exchange Student program at BYU for the winter semester, gned unique opportunities to visit Universal Studios and Walt Disney World in Orlando.
The program, which kicked off with a trip on January 25th, offered these international students from South Korea, France, Italy, and Chile not only academic immersion but also cultural engagement through memorable American experiences. Hosted by BYU's Whitmore Global Business Center since its inception in 2006, this program has expanded to collaborate with universities worldwide, including those located in China, Mexico, Brazil, France, Germany, Portugal, Spn, and beyond.
An integral part of the experience involves activities that allow students to understand American culture while studying at BYU. The chance to grasp a deeper understanding of the US culture while actively participating in campus events, intramural sports tournaments, was truly enriching, shared Taeri Kim, an exchange student from South Korea specializing in French studies.
Sam Brown, Director of International Student and Scholar Service ISSS, highlighted that the program targets J1 studentsthose who are participating for a semester's worth of cultural immersion. This distinction sets it apart from other international student programs by fostering global ambassadors capable of sharing their unique American experiences across borders.
With oversight provided by the Department of State, the ISSS ensures that activities throughout the academic year, including monthly cultural outings and large-scale excursions at the start of each semester, are both educational and entertning.
For this winter session, students anticipate visits to various locations around Utah such as Park City and national parks, alongside American-style birthday celebration.
The program underscores BYU's commitment to offering a comprehensive study abroad experience that enriches international students' understanding of American culture through direct interaction with American life.
