The Department of Education acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of Country throughout Australia and their ongoing connection to land, waters, community, culture and knowledge. The department pays its respects to them and their ancestors past and present, acknowledging that they are the custodians of this land.

This month, we released new data on international student enrolments which indicates a 17 increase from May 2019 levels. As per year-to-date information up until May 2024, there were approximately 810,960 enrolments - marking the highest figure for this period since records began. Over the same timeframe, commencements reached an all-time high of 289,230, showing a growth rate of 11 compared to May 2019.

A closer look at enrolment demographics reveals that Vietnamese students have seen the most significant increase in enrolments since 2019, with Vietnam being the fifth largest contributor after China, India and South Korea. Additionally, enrolment figures across all sectors show a notable rise, with increases of 46 in vocational education trning VET, 7 in English language and other courses ELICOS and only slight declines in schools -24 and non-award programs -29.

In considering the data presented here, it's important to note that international student enrolments are based on Provider Registration and International Student Management System PRISMS, capturing enrolment counts rather than individual students. Therefore, multiple enrolments by the same student could impact these figures.

This information is compiled in monthly year-to-date snapshots of PRISMS which, while providing a comprehensive overview, may vary slightly due to ongoing updates within the system. The department regularly publishes data in both monthly YTD and annual calar year formats for reference purposes.

These findings demonstrate that Australia remns a leading destination for international students despite global challenges. They underscore our commitment to fostering a rich educational environment for all who come here to learn.
