American University's Plan for Inclusive Excellence
Founded to address the evolving needs of society, American University AU prioritizes diversity, equity, and inclusion as core principles. To realize our mission of fostering a world-class educational environment that transcs discrimination and fosters innovation, AU has embarked on an ambitious journey toward inclusive excellence.
In 2017, we began this transformative path to understand the disparities experienced by students of color compared to their white counterparts and committed to avoiding the replication of past injustices. The roadmap for our progress includes a series of updated goals, action steps, and data-driven metrics that will guide AU's efforts toward creating an equitable campus environment.
Phase Two: Advancing Racial Equity
Building upon the foundational achievements made in Phase One, we are now focused on strengthening the pillars of diversity, equity, and inclusion across every layer of our institution. With a heightened emphasis on advancing racial equity, this phase make AU not only diverse but also an antiracist community that encourages groundbreaking innovation.
Goals for Years 3-5
The upcoming years will see us delve deeper into action items designed to achieve five core objectives:
Enhancing access to educational opportunities
Building an inclusive community that nurtures innovation
Strengthening campus policies and practices to ensure equity
Elevating the representation of underrepresented groups in leadership roles
Promoting a culture where every individual feels a sense of belonging
Measuring Our Progress
To track our progress effectively, we have set specific metrics for each goal:
By 2023, at least 80 of senior administrators, faculty, staff, students, and alumni leaders who participate in Inclusive Excellence IE trning will report that they've gned skills applicable to their dly work.
At least 70 of the AU community should agree that our institution is committed to fostering an environment where everyone feels a sense of belonging.
A minimum of 65 of students, faculty, and staff must feel that AU actively combats discrimination and bias.
Innovation in Inclusive Excellence
To further solidify our commitment to inclusive excellence:
The District Scholars program will continue providing full scholarships for high-achieving students from the Washington, DC area with significant financial need.
The AU Inclusive Pedagogy Academy will offer faculty development workshops focused on incorporating inclusive teaching practices into their courses.
An initiative to foster diversity among suppliers through our vor selection process will be implemented.
The Future of Inclusive Excellence
In the aftermath of the Supreme Court's ruling on race-conscious admissions, AU leaders will analyze its implications and strategize how to mntn diversity in student populations while respecting constitutional guidelines. Our panel discussion provide insights into ongoing efforts in promoting inclusive practices and discuss potential pathways for sustning diversity in higher education.
